Foreign Teacher Income in Vietnam – By Student Level & School Type

If you are considering moving to Vietnam to teach English, the very first question that probably comes to mind is: “How much can I earn?” Vietnam is currently one of the fastest-growing English education markets in Asia, with an ever-increasing demand for foreign teachers.

In this article, you will find an overview of teacher salaries and rates, clearly categorized by education level as well as by school type.

 

1. Kindergarten & Primary

a. Public Schools / Language Centers

Full-time (monthly):

  • Non-native teachers: 1300 – 2.307 USD/month.
  • Native English-speaking teachers: 1700 – 2700 USD/month.

Part-time (hourly):

  • Non-native teachers: 17 – 27 USD/hour.
  • Native English-speaking teachers: 19 – 29 USD/hour.

b. International Schools

Full-time (monthly):

  • Non-native teachers: 1500 – 2500 USD/month.
  • Native teachers: 1900 – 2850 USD/month

Part-time (hourly):

  • Non-native teachers: 19 – 28 USD/hour.
  • Native teachers: 21 – 30 USD/hour.

(*) Exchange rate at the time of writing: 1 USD = 26,000 VND.

 

2. Secondary & High School

a. Public Schools / Language Centers

Full-time (monthly):

  • Non-native teachers: 1500 – 2500 USD/month.
  • Native teachers: 1900 – 2850 USD/month.

Part-time (hourly):

  • Non-native teachers: 19 – 28 USD/hour.
  • Native teachers: 21 – 30 USD/hour.

b. International Schools

Full-time (monthly):

  • Non-native teachers: 1700 – 2650 USD/month
  • Native teachers: 2100 – 3000 USD/month or higher, depending on experience and school.

Part-time (hourly):

  • Non-native teachers: 21 – 30 USD/hour.
  • Native teachers: 23 – 32 USD/hour.

3. IELTS, Business English, Corporate Training

a. Language Centers / Test Prep Classes

Full-time (monthly):

  • Non-native teachers: 1700 – 2650 USD/month
  • Native teachers: 2100 – 3000 USD/month

Part-time (hourly):

  • Non-native teachers: 21 – 30 USD/hour.
  • Native teachers: 23 – 32 USD/hour, particularly higher when teaching IELTS 6.5+ prep

b. Private Tutoring (1-on-1)

Part-time (hourly):

  • Non-native teachers: 19 – 30 USD/hour.
  • Native teachers: 21 – 32 USD/ hour

The salaries for foreign teachers in Vietnam are generally higher than many expect, especially within international schools or IELTS preparation.

  • Non-native teachers: Often earn similar rates to native teachers if they hold strong qualifications and relevant certifications.
  • Native English-speaking teachers: Consistently receive the highest salaries, especially at international schools and reputable centers.

Hourly rates tend to rise with student levels: Kindergarten < Secondary/High School < IELTS/Business English, reflecting both the demand for advanced skills and the willingness of parents, students, and corporations to pay higher fees.

International schools typically pay fixed monthly salaries (rather than hourly) and often provide additional benefits such as housing allowances, insurance, and paid leave.
